Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva has signed an exclusive long-term agreement with Sony Classical.
A graduate of the Conservatoire de musique de Genève, the 32-year-old first rose to international prominence when she won Plácido Domingo’s Operalia competition in 2010.
Yoncheva has also won numerous other awards, both in Bulgaria and abroad, including the prize of Les Amis du Festival d’Aix for her role as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte at the festival in 2007.
Yoncheva has performed at a range of international venues, including Teatro Real Madrid, Lincoln Center, and Glyndebourne.
‘Recorded music was always especially important for me,’ said Yoncheva. ‘In the cold and poor Bulgaria of my childhood, recordings, be they from Queen or Pink Floyd or Maria Callas, were my most important window to the world.’
Commenting on the signing, she added: ‘It’s the beginning of an exciting adventure, which I know will be full of beautiful and true music.’
Yoncheva’s first album for the label will feature repertoire from 19th century Paris, and is due for release in autumn next year.
Yoncheva is the latest in a string of recent high-profile signings for Sony Classical, which includes the tenor Jonas Kaufmann and organist Cameron Carpenter.
