Yo-Yo Ma has recreated Joshua Bell’s famous 2007 stunt by performing in a subway in Montréal.
However, unlike Bell, Ma did not do so anonymously, and instead a large crowd formed to hear the performance. The event was one of his ‘days of action’ that have made up his Bach Project world tour. For the project, Ma is performing all six Bach Cello Suites on six continents.
In the subway, Ma performed Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, which the crowd sang along to. And, this being the Bach Project, he also played the prelude from the German composer’s Cello Suite No 1.
The cellist was joined in the subway by a number of local poets as well as scientist Olivier Oullier.
