Upswing announces Catch Me will tour UK Festivals

The contemporary circus company, Upswing, have announced UK tour dates for the outdoor dance-circus show, Catch Me.

Catch Me interprets the expectations of relationships between ages and gender and the first assumptions that people make when they see a couple who are of different generations, race and genders. The outdoor show is set with 30 intricately balanced chairs, designed by Becky Minto. Her chair installation represents every day objects that offer the opportunity to play with different relationship dynamics.

Vicki Amedume, artistic director and founder of Upswing said, “We are seldom seen or acknowledged by others the way we see ourselves or want ourselves acknowledged. I have noticed walking with my brother, a large black man, that people often perceived him as threatening and rarely the caring father and vulnerable soul I know him to be. I wanted to make Catch Me to challenge these assumptions and explore how identity is formed in the eye of the spectator.”

The award-winning, diverse led contemporary circus company was first established in 2006 with their productions often incorporating aerial, theatre, dance, text and multimedia to create a narrative punch. Circus’s combination of risk-taking, trust and collaboration enables the company to push the boundaries.

The show will be touring to Norfolk & Norwich Festival, Brighton Festival, Greenwich + Docklands International Festival, Stockton International Riverside Festival, Freedom Festival and, Festival of Creative Ageing and will have two European residencies in the Czech Republic and Portugal by Roundabout Europe, a collaboration of five European festivals to give outdoor theatre a circuit of residencies and support for professional makers.

Catch Me is part of a series of several outdoor shows which include The Red Shoes, Loved Up, The Ramshackle House and Bedtime Stories.
