Universal Music Group signs deal with Facebook

Universal Music Group (UMG) has signed a music licensing deal with Facebook. It is the first agreement of its kind between a record label and the social media giant.

The global, multi-year agreement allows Facebook to use UMG tracks across Facebook, Instagram and virtual reality system Oculus. For users, this means they can now share music from UMG’s catalogue on both social media platforms.

Tamara Hrivnak, head of music business development and partnerships at Facebook, said: “There is a magnetic relationship between music and community building. Music lovers, artists and writers will all be right at home as we open up creativity, connection and innovation through music and video.”

Michael Nash, executive vice president of digital strategy at UMG, added: “Together, Facebook and UMG are creating a dynamic new model for collaboration between music companies and social platforms to advance the interests of recording artists and songwriters while enhancing the social experience of music for their fans.”

The two companies also plan to introduce new products on the Facebook platform at a later date.
