UNESCO launches COVID-19 debate series

Culture experts from across the world have come together for an online debate. Organised in response to COVID-19, participants discussed measures to protect the arts, the use of technology, and artists’ rights.

Singer song-writer Angélique Kidjo Singer-songwriter, filmmaker Deeyah Kahn Musician, composer Jean-Michel Jarre, director Luis Puenzo, Croatian minister of culture Nina Obuljen-Koržinek and author Yasmina Khadra took part in the debate. An online audience of over 1,000 people, who posted questions and feedback, joined them.

The International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) and UNESCO jointly hosted the event, which took place on 15 April. Further debates are planned by UNESC as part of its ResiliArt series.

“We have raised some issues concerning the vulnerability of artists’ status, [including] the need for copyright protection,” said Obuljen-Koržinek in an interview with Total Croatia News after the debate.
