UK opera companies to merge

The Opera Group and Mahogany Opera, both leading UK companies, have announced that they will merge to form the Mahogany Opera Group.

Frederic Wake-Walker, who is the founder of Mahogany Opera, will become the company’s artistic director, whilst John Gilhooly, director of Wigmore Hall, has been named as chair.

Wake-Walker said: ‘Mahogany Opera Group will create bespoke operas specifically customised to different spaces and places throughout the UK and internationally – presenting each distinct project with a vitality that stretches the boundaries of what opera can be and who it is for.’

The company’s first production is Gloria – A Pigtale, a burlesque opera by HK Gruber set in a butcher’s shop, beginning on 17 May.
