T’Shan Williams to play Celie in The Color Purple

T’Shan Williams has been announced as the leading role of Celie in The Color Purple in the upcoming production from Curve Leicester and Birmingham Hippodrome.

Williams has previously performed on the West End as Heather Duke in Heathers The Musical, she also performed in Caroline or Change at the Hampstead and The Life at Southwark Playhouse. She joins cast Joanna Francis as Shug Avery, Ako Mitchell as Miser, and Simon-Anthony Rhoden as Mister’s son Harpo.

Williams is set to replace the initially announced actress Seyi Omooba who was let go after a resurfaced Facebook post opposing homosexuality.

This production of The Color Purple will be the first UK production performed outside of London, under the direction of Tinuke Craig and music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. The production runs from 28 June to 13 July at Curve Leicester before transferring to Birmingham Hippodrome from 16-20 July.
