The Jamie Lloyd Company has announced Tom Hiddleston will play Robert in its new production of Betrayal at London’s Harold Pinter Theatre. Co-presenting partners are Ambassador Theatre Group Productions, Glass Half Full Productions, Gavin Kalin Productions and Benjamin Lowy Productions.
Betrayal is part of the Pinter at the Pinter series, an unprecedented season of Harold Pinter’s work, marking 10 years since the Nobel Prize winner’s death, launched in September 2018 under the direction of 38-year-old Jamie Lloyd, currently one of the most influential figures in British theatre. A seasoned adapter of Pinter, Lloyd’s been credited with reigniting the West End with productions to entice new audiences.
The special 10th anniversary season marking Harold Pinter’s death, in association with ATG, gives theatre fans the opportunity to see all of Pinter’s short plays, alongside a selection of his poems and sketches – and it’s attracted an A-list British cast, including the likes of Keith Allen, Meera Syal, Jane Horrocks, Jon Culshaw, Danny Dyer, Lee Evans, Abbie Finn, Maggie Steed, David Suchet, Martin Freeman, Michael Gambon, and Tamsin Greig among others.
A hit on screen, British actor Hiddleston has starred in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), High-Rise (2015) and earned Bond-like attention in the BBC adaptation of John Le Carré’s The Night Manager (2016). Stage credits include Hamlet, Coriolanus, Ivanov, Othello, Cymbeline and The Changeling.
Betrayal was first produced by the National Theatre in 1978. The original cast featured Pinter at the Pinter company members Penelope Wilton and Michael Gambon. Relaying the dramatics of a seven-year affair, it echoes by Pinter’s seven-year entanglement with BBC Television presenter Joan Bakewell in the 1960s.
“Betrayal is a masterpiece,” said Hiddleston. “Jamie Lloyd’s Pinter at the Pinter season is terrific and I am so pleased that he’s asked me to be part of it.”
Tickets go on sale all at 9am on 29 November with previous The Jamie Lloyd Company ticket bookers, ATG Theatre Card members and Pinter at the Pinter ticket holders having priority.
Betrayal runs at Harold Pinter Theatre from 5 March to 1 June.
