Timothy Chooi has won the Joseph Joachim Violin Competition (JJVC) 2018. He collects a cheque for €50,000.
Canadian Chooi impressed the judges with his performance of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto Op 35. In addition to the cash prize he also gets a three-year loan of a Giovanni Battista Guadagnini (Parma ca 1765) violin, a CD production with Naxos and a number of international recital and concert appearances.
Second prize, the Audience Award and the JJV Community Award went to Ukranian Dmytro Udovychenko. His winnings totalled €34,000. Third, fourth and fifth places went to Cosima Soulez Larivière, Rennosuke Fukuda and Leonard Fu.
Founded in 1991, JJVC takes place every three years under the artistic directorship of professor Krzysztof Wegrzyn. Sergey Dogadin (2015), Alexandra Conunova (2012) and Fumiaki Miura (2009) are its most recent winners.
