Montréal’s Margie Gillis Dance Foundation will premiere The Light Between in Toronto and Ontario next month.
This season marks the 40th anniversary of Margie Gillis’ illustrious performance career as a dancer and choreographer.
Her work has received international critical acclaim and has earned her a string of prestigious awards, including the Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts and the Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award from the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award Foundation. Most recently, she was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Gillis has worked on over 100 solo dance works, many of which have toured worldwide. This latest work has been created by Gillis and painter-sculptor Randall Newman, whom Gillis met over 25 years ago.
The Light Between aims to ‘blend into the language of choreography the sculptural and pictorial elements evocative of the dancer’s body’, and has been choreographed by Gillis, along with Holly Bright and Paola Styron.
The production premiered to a full-house in Montréal last March, and will be performed at The Grand Theatre, London, Ontario on 9 November and the Harbourfront Centre’s Fleck Dance Theatre, Toronto on 12 and 13 November.
