A new vision in classical music management
The Cliburn, renowned for its commitment to advancing classical music and supporting exceptional artists, has launched the Cliburn Agency, a boutique management firm dedicated to fostering the careers of rising and established instrumentalists. IAM catches up with President and CEO Jacques Marquis and Director of Artistic Planning Sandra Doan to explore the motivations behind this initiative, the services offered and the strategic advantages that set the Cliburn Agency apart.
What motivated the Cliburn to launch the Cliburn Agency, and how does it align with the organisation’s overall mission?
Jacques Marquis (JM): The Cliburn’s mission is to advance classical music and the discovery of extraordinary artists, which we do most visibly through the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. However, that mission also encompasses personalised career management for competition medalists, international publicity, and multiple leading concerts and education programmes.
The launch of the Cliburn Agency is a natural extension of this mission. By partnering with artists who possess high artistic calibre and a vision to advance classical music, we aim to magnify their impact. We are honoured to work with these musicians, whose missions align with ours, and to utilise our industry leadership to support them.
What specific advantages do artists gain by being represented by the Cliburn Agency, particularly in terms of international exposure and career development?
JM: Artists represented by the Cliburn Agency gain several key advantages. They receive the personalised attention of a small, dedicated team, backed by the resources and expertise of a much larger entity. This includes our extensive experience in booking, servicing, presenting, producing, project development, public relations and branding, media management and complex contract negotiations. These services, combined with our global exposure and industry connections, provide a uniquely comprehensive support system for our artists.
Can you describe the types of services offered by the Cliburn Agency and how it caters to both rising and established artists?
JM: The Cliburn Agency is a full-service firm offering four key services: general management, concert booking, project management, and publicity and branding. Since its inception, the Cliburn has managed the careers of the medalists of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, offering concert bookings and other services that have expanded to meet the needs of the day. Our experience has equipped us with the expertise to guide rising artists through the next stages of their careers. We tailor our services to meet the unique needs of each individual pianist.
In addition to supporting rising artists, the agency also serves established artists by partnering with them to further develop and realise their vision for their careers. Our team’s extensive experience as producers, presenters, publicists, and managers provides a broad perspective that aids in planning and executing projects, initiatives, and tours.
What criteria were used to select the initial roster of artists for the Cliburn Agency, and what do these artists represent in terms of artistic vision and innovation?
Sandra Doan (SD): The initial Cliburn Agency roster comprises Anderson & Roe Piano Duo; harpist Bridget Kibbey; and pianists Greg Anderson, Peter Dugan, Fei-Fei and Clayton Stephenson. These artists were selected based on their high artistic calibre, intriguing programming, and commitment to community engagement.
All of these artists have been members of the Cliburn Family in some way for a long while, although none are past competition medalists. They’ve all been featured in the Cliburn Concerts series, with Fei-Fei and Clayton having participated in the Cliburn finals in 2013 and 2022, respectively, while Greg, Liz, Peter and Bridget have all been on-air talent for the Cliburn webcasts. These musicians are dedicated to connection and creativity, and they partner with the Cliburn to enhance and magnify their careers, efforts, and impact through innovative projects and community engagement.
In what ways does the Cliburn Agency plan to leverage its existing relationships with industry leaders and its international reputation to benefit its roster?
SD: Through our competitions, career management programme, concert series, community and outreach programmes, and media projects, we have developed a vibrant global network of colleagues and friends who share our mission of advancing classical music.
The fun part for us comes when those relationships lead to connections, collaborations, and creativity that move this art form forward. We have carefully selected artists for the agency who we believe are extraordinary, not only because of their talent and dedication to music, but also because of their vision. We will use every appropriate connection and opportunity in intelligent and strategic ways to support our artists’ goals—for their careers and for classical music—just like the Cliburn does for each of its programmes and initiatives.Additionally, unlike most management firms, the Cliburn has a large, global direct-to-consumer reach, which will benefit the agency artists too.
What role does community engagement play in the agency’s approach to artist management, and why is it important for their roster?
SD: Community engagement plays a key role in the Cliburn Agency’s approach to artist management. Each artist has their own vision of how they want to connect to audiences, whether through innovative projects, introducing new music, or engaging in specific community outreach initiatives.
What role does branding and publicity play in the agency’s strategy for promoting its artists, and how does this contribute to their success?
SD: Branding and publicity are essential components of the Cliburn Agency’s strategy for promoting its artists. We plan to work closely with each artist to help them tell their unique stories and amplify their messages through various channels, including press coverage and social media.
Audience building is critical to an artist’s career success, and our PR efforts are carefully integrated with artistic planning. Just as we do with all Cliburn programmes, we ensure that our publicity strategies align with the artists’ overall career goals, helping them to build a strong brand and connect with their audience effectively.
