Teatro Real to host World Opera Forum

Teatro Real is hosting a World Opera Forum (WOF) from 12-15 April. WOF will bring together the Opera Europa, Opera America and Ópera Latinoamérica gatherings, as well as representatives from Africa, Asia and Oceania.

The forum will focus on four topics: cultural heritage, new opera, diversity and sponsorship. Delegates representing different areas of opera – including managers, composers, stage directors and performers – will collectively debate these issues.

Specifically, WOF will investigate the following four questions:

  • Will the weight of its conventions kill opera?
  • Can new works find their place into the heart of opera tradition, as in theatre or cinema?
  • How can opera find meaning for an ever more diverse audience and reflect 21st century society?
  • How can we develop our capacity to advocate opera in the context of our democracies?

WOF coincides with Teatro Real’s new production of Gloriana by Benjamin Britten, which runs from 12-24 April and is a co-production with English National Opera. Registration for WOF is open until 15 March.
