Running for its third year, shesaid.so has announced its Alternative Power 100 Music List (#AltList2019) honourees. Launched in 2017, its goal is to provide an alternative to Billboard’s Power 100 List and “challenge conventional music industry standards”.
This year, Tarana Burke, founder of #metoo; Dream Hampton, filmmaker and writer; and Deji Olukotun, head of social impact at Sonos, are just some of the names being recognised for their contribution to music community or a specific community they love.
shesaid.so is a diverse international community, comprising women from across all sectors of the industry, from tech, record labels, PR and management. Their vision is to connect and empower marginalised communities in the music industry with a focus on women’s rights. This year’s #AltList2019 theme is ‘community’, with shesaid.so aiming to highlight and showcase overlooked artists and activists.
Helen Marquis, global head of music programming for YouTube, has been recognised on the list for her efforts in the music industry. “I have gone from being told to sweep the floor in a record shop, because it was women’s work, to heading up a global team at one of the biggest platforms for music in the world,” said Marquis.
Kerry Steib, head of social impact for Spotify also made the list with her work that builds empathy and equity through culture, connects artists and fans and breaks down barriers to empower everyone to be a creator. Others include the British Council’s classical music programme manager Michael Duffy; Nick Sabine, co-founder of Resident Advisor; and Chidera Eggrue, initiator of the #SaggyBoobsMatter viral campaign.
The #AltList2019 honourees have been invited by the Association of Independent Music to speak at AIM Connected.
