Australia’s iconic arts venue has launched a new scholarship to support the country’s emerging arts leaders.
Worth AUD20,000 (€13,381), the Lloyd Martin Travelling Scholarship for Emerging Arts Leaders will fund an overseas residency or study trip for arts administrators in the early stages of their careers.
The scheme is open to current employees of the Sydney Opera House and its seven resident companies: the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Bangarra Dance Theatre, Bell Shakespeare, Opera Australia, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Theatre Company and The Australian Ballet.
The scholarship is named after Lloyd Martin, the Opera House’s longest serving general manager, and is funded by the Alexandra and Lloyd Martin Family Foundation.

Louise Herron, CEO of the Sydney Opera House, said: ‘The Martin family has a long association with the performing arts. Their vision and generosity will assist the leaders of tomorrow at that crucial early stage of their careers when an overseas residency
or study tour will have the greatest impact on their professional development, the companies or institutions for which they work and the administration of the arts in Australia.’
Applications for the first round are due by 26 May, and first scholarship recipient will be announced in July.
