Sonya Yoncheva collapses before Met Opera performance

Sonya Yoncheva made a last minute cancellation at the Metropolitan Opera on 10 January. The Bulgarian singer pulled out of her final performance of Otello after collapsing at home.

Yoncheva made the following announcement on Instagram: “I am so, so, so sorry I can’t perform tonight for the last Otello at the [Met Opera]. Couple of hours ago at home, I was preparing for the show, when suddenly I collapsed. I feel very weak and I will certainly need few days to recover. Thank you so much for your comprehension.”

Yoncheva has been praised for her performance, with The New York Times calling her, “an exquisite, uncommonly passionate Desdemona”. The show was broadcast live, without her, on the Met’s website.

The Met has made no mention of Yoncheva’s illness on its social media channels. However, she has reputation for cancellations, so this latest will not have come as a surprise.
