IAM October 2026
Welcome to the October issue of International Arts Manager, where our Canadian focus begins in Ottawa with the National Arts Centre Orchestra’s new music director, John Storgårds. After more than a decade as principal guest conductor, Storgårds takes the helm with plans to bring overlooked Canadian composers to wider attention, broaden the repertoire and strengthen the orchestra’s international profile.
While Storgårds is championing less familiar music, Vancouver Opera is focusing its forthcoming seasons around some of opera’s best-known works as it rebuilds audiences after the pandemic. General Director Tom Wright discusses the thinking behind that decision and a sponsorship agreement sealed with a handshake. In Quebec, folk band Le Vent du Nord looks ahead to its 25th anniversary with a symphonic concert in Montreal, a reunion with Scottish group Breabach and international touring. Meanwhile, in ISPA’s Global Voices, Annabelle Cloutier and Mélanie Dumont discuss opening Canada’s stages to new work, new audiences and international partners.
Also in this issue
Montreal also welcomes the 22nd CINARS Biennale in November, with more than 375 presenters expected for its largest edition to date. The programme includes a keynote from high-wire artist Philippe Petit, who also speaks with Gilles Doré in CINARS’ Connected Voices about balance, collaboration and a lifetime on the wire. We also look ahead to Festival Carrefour in Quebec City and hear from HEC Montréal and SMU about preparing the next generation of cultural managers through their joint MMIAM programme.
