San Francisco Symphony are tuning up for four concerts this September as part of the 2018 Global Climate Action Summit.
The programme boasts Copland’s Appalachian Spring, Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, and Castiglioni’s Inverno in-ver. Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) leads the orchestra, with Yuja Wang at the piano and Abigail Washburn on vocals.
Inverno in-ver will be performed in a new staging conceived and directed by MTT, with video projections designed by Clyde Scott and lighting from Luke Kritzeck. Appalachian Spring, meanwhile, is accompanied by projections taken from photo exhibition COAL+ICE. Curated by the Asia Society, it documents the environmental disfigurement caused by burning fossil fuels.
“The COAL + ICE Project is enormously pleased to be partnering with the SF Symphony not only because the orchestra under MTT is one of the treasures of the world’s cultural patrimony, but because global climate change is the issue-of-all-global-issues that exempts no one,” said Asia Society Center on U.S.-China Relations director Orville Schell.
The Global Climate Action Summit runs from 12-14 September. Its mission is to encourage “worldwide commitments and accelerated action from countries” on climate change.
