Pass the baton: October 2024

  • Sasha Scolnik-Brower has been appointed as the inaugural Bernard Haitink Conducting Fellow with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. During
    his two-year fellowship he will assist Sir Simon Rattle and conduct a variety of orchestral projects and concerts.
  • Miguel Sepúlveda has been named as Dresdner Philhamronie’s inaugural Sir Donald Runnicles Fellow. During the two-year appointment he will assist Runnicles throughout the 2024-25 season as well as conducting concerts during the 2025-26 season. Lisbon-born Sepúlveda is currently one of the six “Designate Winners” of Rotterdam’s International Conducting Competition and will compete in the final in June 2025.
  • Finnish violinist and conductor Pekka Kuusisto becomes the Principal Guest Conductor of Gothenburg Symphony from its 2025-26 season. After making his conducting debut with the orchestra in 2023, Kuusisto returns as soloist next month, performing Bryce Dessner’s Violin Concerto.
  • Houston Symphony has appointed Chilean conductor Gonzalo Farias as its Associate Conductor, following his year-long tenure as Assistant Conductor. His previous roles include Associate Conductor of the Kansas City
    Symphony and Associate Conductor of the Jacksonville Symphony. He has also served as Assistant Conductor of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Conducting Fellow at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.  
  • Joshua Bell will join the New Jersey Symphony as its inaugural Principal Guest Conductor. The acclaimed violinist and conductor will take up the role at the beginning of the 2025-26 season, continuing until the end of the 2028-29 season.
  • Gabriel Venzago has been announced as General Music Director of Staatstheater Mainz and Chief Conductor of Philharmonisches Staatstheater Mainz, beginning his tenure at the beginning of the 2025-26 season. Venzago is currently Chief Conductor of the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz and in 2023 founded the Junge Bodensee Philharmonie. 
  • The Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI) has appointed Martyn Brabbins as Chief Conductor, a role he will commence at the beginning of the 2025-26 season. Brabbins, who was recently appointed Chief Conductor of the Malmö Symphony in Sweden, joins the SOI to coincide with its 20th anniversary. Based at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai, the SOI is India’s first and only professional orchestra.
