The winners of Opus Klassik, a new set of classical music prizes, have been announced. It succeeds Echo Klassik, with a jury made up of representatives from the classical music sector in Germany.
Tenor Juan Diego Flórez and soprano Diana Damrau were both named singer of the year; Flórez for his album Mozart, released on Sony Classical, Damrau for Meyerbeer: Grand Opera on Erato.
Elsewhere Gewandhausorchester Leipzig were awarded the orchestra of the year prize, while Cornelius Meister was named conductor of the year for his work on Bohuslav Martinů: The Symphonies – Complete Recording.
Opus Klassik also named five instrumentalists of the year: Mie Miki (accordion), Roman Patkoló (double bass), Daniil Trifonov (piano), Albrecht Mayer (oboe) and Frank Bungarten (guitar).
Young musicians received recognition, too. Rising star Sheku Kanneh-Mason was named young artist of the year, alongside soprano Regula Mühlemann.
