The National Youth Orchestra (NYO) of Great Britain will take its first ever US tour in 2019, including a concert at Carnegie Hall. As a result of the announcement, NYO has extended its 2019 application deadline to the end of July in order to open the opportunity to as many young musicians as possible.
The tour also features an appearance at the Ravinia Festival and a number of exchange projects with young American musicians. Full dates will be announced on 11 July at a reception featuring tour soloist Nicola Benedetti.
NYO chair Liz Forgan said: “This is a great opportunity to put the UK’s famous NYO on a world stage and to forge links with other teenage musicians through NYO’s internationally admired model for teenage engagement and peer mentoring.”
Further, NYO has announced that MP David Warburton will chair its Development Board, which is responsible for long-term funding strategy.
Remarked Warburton: “It really is a wonderful opportunity to be able to take part in the process behind taking this extraordinary and inspirational orchestra – and magnificent advertisement for the UK – closer to more people.”
He added that, “The US tour will not only benefit those many people who will be lucky enough to be touched by their performances, but will also give the performers themselves an experience which will stay with them for life.”
