As we look to the 2023-24 season, the LA Phil and Philadelphia Orchestra have announced the appointments of their new assistant conductors. The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association (LA Phil) has appointed former Dudamel Fellow Rodolfo Barráez as Assistant Conductor, Ann Ronus Chair, for the 2023-24 season in a role that will see him serving as the cover conductor for Gustavo Dudamel and any guest conductors during the orchestra’s subscription season and on tour; he will make his Hollywood Bowl debut in 2024.
The Berlin-based Venezuelan conductor will begin his second season as Associate Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra later this year and will join the Paris Opera as Conductor-in-Residence.
This appointment coincided with the orchestra’s announcement of the 2023-24 Dudamel Fellows: Anna Handler, Ross Jamie Collins, Carlos Ágreda and Michelle Di Russo. The programme provides promising young conductors with the opportunity to develop their craft and enrich their musical experience.
Elsewhere, the Philadelphia Orchestra has announced that current Conducting Fellows, Austin Chanu and Tristan Rais-Sherman will become Assistant Conductors; Naomi Woo will take up her position as Assistant Conductor at the beginning of the 2024-25 season. They will serve as cover conductors and assist Music and Artistic Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
