American violinist Nancy Zhou has won the Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition (SISIVC). She collects a cheque for USD100,000 (€86,100).
In an all-female final, Zhou performed Qigang Chen’s La joie de la souffrance – a piece commissioned for the competition – and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major. The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Stern, accompanied her.
Second place went to Olga Šroubková from the Czech Republic (worth USD50,000), while third prize was picked up by Ukranian Diana Tishchenko (worth USD25,000). The remaining finalists were Jia Yi Chen (China), Chang Yuan Ting (Canada) Yun Tang (China).
SISIVC’s jury was chaired by David Stern and featured Emmanuel Hondré, Vera Tsu Welling, Lina Yu, Martin Campbell-White, Glenn Dicterow, Augustin Dumay, Daniel Heifetz, Weigang Li, Siqing Lu, Sreten Krstic, Dora Schwarzberg, Philip Setzer, Maxim Vengerov, and Zakhar Bron.
Japanese violinist Mayu Kishima won the first edition of SISIVC in 2016.
