The Moldovian-British ensemble Mithras Trio has won the 10th edition of the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition (TICMC). Running from 23-27 September, it saw five trios competing in Trondheim for a top prize of €15,000.
Split over three rounds, Mithras Trio performed works by Brahms and Beethoven, including the latter’s Ghost Trio, Op 70 No 1 in D Major. They also performed a work commissioned for the competition.
Mithras Trio is made up of violinist Ionel Manciu, cellist Leo Popplewell and pianist Dominic Degavino. They are all graduates of the Guildhall School of Music, and have previously won prizes at the St James Chamber Music Competition and Cavatina Intercollegiate Chamber Music Competition.
Second place went to Trio Hèlios, who collected €10 000, while third went to Trio Opal who won €5 000. Trio Opal also took home the audience prize. Each of the top three trios also received a print by Norwegian artist Håkon Bleken.
The jury for TICMC Lambert Orkis, Sharon Bezaly, Thomas Hoppe, François Kieffer, Sølve Sigerland, Tanja Tetzlaff and Marianne Thorsen.
