The Los Angeles Philharmonic has opened its summer concert season at the Hollywood Bowl with an appearance from Misty Copeland. LA Phil’s opening night at the Bowl is always a big occasion, made more so this year by Copeland’s star turn.
The American Ballet Theatre (ABT) principal performed alongside fellow dancers Marcelo Gomes, Natalia Osipova and Sergei Polunin, under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel. It is estimated more than 16,000 people were in attendance, with the dancers receiving a rapturous response.
The programme included excerpts from ballets such as Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake; Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet; and Adolphe Adam’s Giselle.
LA Phil’s summer season at the Hollywood Bowl features guest appearances from Jean-Yves Thibaudet (27 July), Vasily Petrenko (3 August), Joshua Bell (29 August) and John Williams (3 September). The final LA Phil concert at the Bowl is on 16 September.
