Saffron Hall, Saffron Walden’s new state-of-the-art performance venue, will open its doors with a celebratory concert featuring Barbara Hannigan, Mark Padmore and Imogen Cooper.
Taking place on 30 November, the concert will also feature the newly composed Saffron Fanfare from the Master of the Queen’s Music, Peter Maxwell Davies, which will be performed by the Britten Sinfonia.
Saffron Hall is the first venue of its kind in the Essex town, and was built in partnership with Saffron Walden County High School and the Yellow Car Charitable Trust.
At a cost of GBP10m (€11.7m), it is thought to be the largest gift of its kind to a UK state school.
The emphasis on the first guest programme is ‘British artists with international reputations’. Acts appearing at the venue in 2014 include the pianist John Lill, the Brodsky Quartet, and guest speakers Germaine Greer and Andrew Motion.
