John Berry, former artistic director of English National Opera, has launched a new theatre company – Scenario Two. And, in a major coup, the company has signed Renée Fleming to appear in its first musical production, The Light in the Piazza.
“The theatrical landscape in London is thrilling at the moment with many commercial and subsidised producers delivering breath taking work,” said Berry. “This new direction is therefore an exciting personal challenge for me and I’m enjoying the balance of commercial theatre and opera in my life.”
With a book by Craig Lucas and music and lyrics by Adam Guettel, The Light in the Piazza will debut at Royal Festival Hall in the summer of 2019. Renee will co-star alongside Dove Cameron, with Daniel Evans directing. In a press release, Scenario Two described The Light in the Piazza as a “touching and heart-wrenching love story set in Florence during the summer of 1953.”
Berry will run Scenario Two alongside Anthony Lilley, with Terri-Jayne Griffin as producing director. The company will create new productions and revive classic musicals.
