Harry Potter tickets up for auction

Harry Potter might come from humble origins –  a cupboard under the stairs – but tickets for his theatre outing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child are being sold at auction with a reserve price fit for a prince: GBP150 (€190).

But this isn’t an ordinary theatre show, as the performance will be made magical by an introduction from JK Rowling herself. The Harry Potter creator will give an opening address for the show on 18 September, with the proceeds from the night going to her Lumos charity. Some packages are already as much as GBP6,000.

800 tickets have been made available and auction prices start between GBP150 and GBP300. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child previews begin in June and the West End show is sold out well into next year, making these seats a hot ticket for fans who have missed out so far.

Rowling’s Lumos charity seeks to help children living in orphanages and institutions across the world, with a goal of returning them to community care where their social and educational needs can be met. Currently eight million children live in such institutional care.

‘This special gala performance is not only a wonderful opportunity for fans to see the play but it will help raise awareness of the vulnerable, voiceless children living in orphanages around the world and play its part in helping to get them home and back to a loving family, where they belong,’ said Lumos chief executive Georgette Mulheir.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child follows Harry’s life as an overworked employee at the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children. The script of the play will be released for sale this summer.
