Greek National Opera launches TV channel

Greek National Opera (GNO) has launched its own online TV station: GNO TV. The channel will show opera, ballet and musical theatre productions.

GNO TV kicks off on 25 November with Madama Butterfly starring soprano Ermonela Jaho in the lead role. Lukas Karytinos will conduct, with direction from Hugo de Ana.

“The difficult circumstances of the last months have given us the impetus to speed up and bring the future a step closer to us,” remarked GNO artistic director Giorgos Koumendakis. “Our artistic outreach strategy acquires now a new dimension and we are ready to measure our forces and turn to the global audience side by side with all the prestigious opera houses in the world.”

Tickets for GNO TV shows coast €10. The project is funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, who also paid for GNO’s new home, which opened in 2017.

Upcoming GNO TV shows include ballet Don Quixote and opera Don Giovanni, both in December. GNO TV will then launch its full programme in January.
