Michael Tilson Thomas, Renée Fleming and Laurie Anderson are among the classical nominees for the 2019 Grammy Awards. The winners will be announced on 10 February in a live broadcast from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Tilson Thomas is nominated in Best Orchestral Performance for San Francisco Symphony’s album Schumann: Symphonies 1-4. Other nominees in the category include Andris Nelsons with Boston Symphony Orchestra and Thomas Dausgaard with the Seattle Symphony.
In Best Opera Recording, John Adams receives a nod for his Doctor Atomic, a recording with BBC Symphony that he also conducted. The (R)Evolution of Steve Jobs is another contemporary opera getting recognition, in a recording made by Santa Fe Opera Orchestra. As for Fleming, her nomination comes as lead soloist on The Met’s recording of Der Rosenkavalier.
In choral works, nominees include Rachmaninov’s The Bells with the Bavarian Radio Choir and Mariss Jansons and The Clarion Choir’s recording of Kastalsky’s Memory Eternal.
For contemporary works, Laurie Anderson and Kronos Quartet are nominated for Landfall (in the Chamber Music category), while Missy Mazzoli’s Vespers for Violin is on the Contemporary Classical Composition shortlist.
