Dallas Symphony Orchestra has asked Gemma New to be its next principal guest conductor. She will conduct two weeks of concerts in the 2019-20 season, rising to three weeks of concerts in the following season.
New already holds to positions: music director of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra (Canada) and resident conductor of the St Louis Symphony Orchestra (US) where she is music director of its Youth Orchestra. She’s also a former Dudamel Conducting Fellow at Los Angeles Philharmonic.
“It is a great pleasure and privilege to be named to this position at the Dallas Symphony,” said New. “I am looking forward to joining these exceptional musicians on the Meyerson Symphony Center stage, creating transformative performances with them as well as making many new friends in Dallas.”
Added Dallas Symphony Association CEO and president Kim Noltemy: “Our search committee was extremely impressed with her inspiring podium leadership and the excellent artistic achievements during her St Louis Symphony tenure. We know that she will be a fantastic artistic complement to incoming Music Director Fabio Luisi.”
New’s appointment comes just over a month after the orchestra named Julia Wolfe as its composer-in-residence. Pullitzer-prize winner Wolfe will debut a new orchestral work during the orchestra’s 2019-20 season and lead a series of student composers’ workshops.
