18-year-old composer Freya Ireland and 16-year-old cellist Sheku Kanneh-Maso have won the first RPS Duet Prizes for Young Composers and Instrumentalists respectively.
The biennial prize has been set up to recognise outstanding musicians who study in mainstream schools. It is run in partnership between Royal Philharmonic Society and the Duet Group, and will connect young musicians with the music profession.
Ireland and Kanneh-Maso each won GBP1,500 (€1,905) and the opportunity for a performance at a national music festival. The Duet Group is the leading organisation for leasing and maintaining musical instruments in schools, conservatoires and universities.
