Felix Mildenberger has won the 2018 Donatella Flick LSO Conducting Competition. The German conductor triumphed ahead of Harry Ogg (UK) and Alexander Colding Smith (Australia/Denmark).
Mildenberger is no stranger to such challenges, having finished second at the 12th Cadaqués International Conducting Competition in Barcelona last year. He has already secured a major orchestral position, working as assistant conductor at the Orchestre National de France under Emmanuel Krivine.
He receives GBP15,000 (€17,000) and the chance to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra. The final itself took place Barbican Hall, with the even broadcast by medici.tv.
The three finalists each performed three works in the final: Wagner’s Overture: Die Meistersinger, Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No 2, and Zoltan Kodály’s Dances of Galanta.
The competition was open to conductors aged 30 or under as of 20 November 2018, with residents of the EU as well as Norway, Iceland, Lichtenstein and Switzerland all eligible.
