The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a special concert. On 27 November 44 EBU radio stations from 36 countries will broadcast a live performance from Queen Elizabeth Hall in London.
The concert will recreate some of the elements from EBU’s first ever broadcast, including Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante and compositions by Benjamin Britten. The programme also includes the world premiere of Dobrinka Tabakova’s Orpheus’ Comet, performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra and conducted by Johannes Wildner.
Since its formation in 1967, EBU has grown from 13 classical music radio stations to include 73 stations that play folk, opera, jazz, pop and world music. EBU’s Euroradio Music Exchange offers around 3,000 concerts each year, with each performance reaching around 2 million listeners.
EBU’s head of music Pascale Labrie said: “Over the last 50 years, EBU and its members have built the world’s most prestigious virtual concert hall. Each week, millions of listeners enjoy unique musical performances from the greatest venues, representing every genre from hip-hop and folk to opera and symphonic music.”
