UK charity Sound and Music has launched the latest round of its artist residency programme Embedded, putting out an open call for composers looking to partner with organisations such as Centro Mexicano para la Música y las Artes Sonoras (CMMAS) in Mexico and the The British Library Sound Archive in London.
Sound and Music is a charity that promotes new music, arranging opportunities for emerging composers and organising events and tours that expose the public to fresh compositions. Its Embedded programme pairs composers with interesting arts institutions, encouraging cross-genre creativity. Funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, a charity that backs environmental, educational and creative activities, so far forty artists have taken part in Embedded residencies.
The four institutions taking part this year are CMMAS, in the form of a residency at CMMAS in Morelia, Mexico; Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (BCMG), who are offering an opportunity for a composer to work with the group and compose pieces for an ensemble as well as a solo young performer; The British Library Sound Archive, where the Embedded candidate will spend 12 months immersing themselves in the library’s extensive sound and recording equipment collection; and Heart n Soul, a London-based charity that explores how people with and without disabilities can come together through creative activities, with the selected composer working on a variety of projects with existing Heart n Soul artists.
The closing date for the CMMAS and BCMG is 8 July, while Heart n Soul and The British Library are accepting applications until 16 and 17 July respectively. Links to the application packs can be found on the Sound and Music website.
