Dresden Music Festival programme released, new contract for Vogler

Dresden Music Festival has released its 2020 programme. Jaap van Zweden and the New York Philharmonic, Barbara Hannigan and Senegalese singer Pape Diouf are all in the schedule.

The festival – which was founded in 1978 – begins on 12 May with a concert from Jaap van Zweden and NY Phil. They will be joined by pianist Evgeny Kissin for a rendition of Mozart’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No 25 in C Major.

Elsewhere Pape Diouf makes his German debut with his band La Génération Consciente (15 May); BBC Symphony Orchestra gives a concert of Britten, Barber and Elgar with Sakari Oramo (16 May); Gidon Kremer Trio perform pieces by Mieczysław Weinberg and Beethoven (18 May); and Barbara Hannigan conducts, and sings with, Munich Philharmonic (28 May).

In other news, festival intendant Jan Vogler has seen his contract extended until 2026. He’s led the festival since 2009, during which time its revenue has increased five-fold.

Commented Dresden Mayor Dirk Hilbert: “It is encouraging how broad groups of the population are increasingly addressed and involved in the music festival. Dresden does not host the Dresden Music Festival for selected cultural elites but a festival offering a program with which many people can identify.”

Dresden Music Festival runs until 12 June.
