Domingo aims for 4,000

Plácido Domingo hopes to reach a staggering 4,000 performances before he retires. The singer, who has switched from tenor to baritone as his career has progressed, claims he wants to play at least 100 more concerts.

At present the Spaniard has amassed 3,899 concert appearances, with his 3,900th appearance due to take place on Friday at Teatro Real in Madrid. Domingo will play the role of Macbeth in Verdi’s operatic Shakespeare adaptation.

Speaking at a press conference before the opera, Domingo stated: “As long as my body goes, I want to go further…I also hope to be able to celebrate my 4,000th performance. My work is a great happiness for me, even if it presents a new challenge every night.”

It has already been a year of major milestones for the singer, with special concerts in Berlin and Vienna to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his first appearances in those cities.

Macbeth marks the end of Teatro Real’s opera season. Directed by James Conlon, the opera opened on 11 July and will also be performed on 14 and 17 July.
