Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) has released its 2019 programme, featuring many of classical music’s most famous names – Joyce DiDonato, Gustavo Dudamel, Yuja Wang, Simon Rattle and Sheku Kanneh-Mason will all perform.
Dudamel leads Los Angeles Philharmonic in the world premiere of John Adams’ new work Must the Devil Have All the Good Tunes? with soloist Yuja Wang on 4 August. The orchestra has been named as the festival’s resident company for 2019 and will give another a concert on 3 August, while Youth Orchestra Los Angeles will perform on 4 August.
On 9 August Joyce DiDonato joins the National Youth Orchestra USA under the baton of Antonio Pappano. The mezzo soprano will perform Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été, while the orchestra will also take on Prokofiev’s Symphony No 5.
Meanwhile Simon Rattle leads London Symphony Orchestra in a concert featuring another Adams work Harmonielehre as well as Rachmaninov’s Symphony No 2 on 21 August; Kanneh-Mason is joined by his sister Isata for a recital on 7 August; and Orchestre de Paris visits the festival for the first time in 30 years for two concerts led by Daniel Harding (23-24 August).
In opera, EIF offers two main works. The first is Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, directed by Barrie Kosky with Komische Oper Berlin (15-17 August). The second is Missy Mazzoli’s Breaking the Waves, which gets its European premiere (21-24 August). Breaking the Waves is a joint production by Scottish Opera and Opera Ventures.
For theatre and dance fans, Internationaal Theater Amsterdam offers a new adaptation of Oedipus directed by Robert Icke (14-17 August); Stephen Fry brings his trilogy Mythos; and choreographer Helen Pickett’s The Crucible, is danced by Scottish Ballet.
