Derida Dance Centre (DDC) in Sofia, Bulgaria, has announced major expansion plans. It will take over a former TV studio, converting it into a multidisciplinary stage for movement-based performing arts.
Named Derida Stage, the new venue will be equipped with a 10x10m stage and seating for up to 100 people. Further, there will be an exhibition space that DDC will use to showcase the work of dance designers.
“This is a new step for DDC, as the venue will run alongside our old rehearsal studio,” said DDC CEO Atanas Maev. “The main goal is to initiate and create an active dance arts society here in Sofia, as well as offering a regular programme of performance.”
The venue will not be subsidised by the government, but will instead rely on ticket sales and rentals.
Adds Maev: “There will also be regular late night social events on Friday and Saturday evenings for our audience.”
Derida Stage opens with a gala event on 19 April.
