Dalia Stasevska to make BBC Proms debut

Dalia Stasevska was announced as BBC Symphony Orchestra (BBC SO) principal guest conductor in January of this year, and now she will make her BBC Proms debut with a programme of Sibelius, Weinberg and Tchaikovsky.

Stasevska’s Proms at the Royal Albert Hall on 6 August, will unite two landmarks of late-Romantic music with a 20th century concerto. Her concert will open with Sibelius’ Karelia Suite presented as a preface to Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s Cello Concerto with Sol Gabetta as soloist. The second part of the evening will be dedicated to Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 6 Pathétique.

Born in Ukraine, Stasevska moved to Finland when she was four. The 35-year-old has only worked as a full-time professional conductor for the last four years, having originally trained as a violinist. Her conducting teachers include Jorma Panula and Leif Segerstam, and she has worked with orchestras such as Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gothenburg Symphony, Orchestre National de Lyon, and Oslo Philharmonic.

Commented Stasevska: “It has been so exciting to get to know the BBC Symphony Orchestra and now to be given the chance to develop our relationship. They are open to new ideas and not afraid to rethink familiar pieces. This is what I love about them. There are no barriers, no walls stopping us from following a fresh line of thought in rehearsal.”

The conductor’s 2019-20 schedule includes debuts with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic (RLPO) and a Barbican Centre concert with the BBC SO on 17 April.
