COVID-19 hits Russian ballet

Artists at the Bolshoi Theatre and Mariinsky Theatre have been quarantined due to positive COVID-19 tests.

The story – only partially confirmed by the companies – has been reported widely by Russian media outlets. Neither company has cancelled upcoming performances.

In a message sent to dancers at the Mariinsky, the company asked dancers not to come for rehearsals of Giselle or solo rehearsals. Classes have also been cancelled, according to RBK TV.

RBK TV said it received the following statement from Bolshoi Theatre after it asked about a dancer being diagnosed with COVID-19: “We do not know its result yet. Everyone who contacted her also passed tests and are quarantined at home. And those who have not communicated with her are engaged in rehearsals.”

Meanwhile Mariinsky Theatre issued the following statement: “In connection with the appeals of several ballet dancers with complaints about the deterioration of their health, they were promptly suspended from work and underwent unscheduled testing, the results of which will be received in the near future.”
