Competition round up

Winners have been announced for three competitions: ARD Music, George Enescu International and Leeds International Piano.

Let’s start with The Leeds, where American Eric Lu took first prize – and GBP25,000 (€28,200). Lu is the first winner of the revamped Leeds event, and will benefit from a “ground-breaking portfolio prize designed with long-term career development in mind”. Second place went to German Mario Häring, with China’s Xinyuan Wang in third.

Next, the George Enescu International Competition, where the cello and violin strands have been decided (the piano final takes place on 23 September). In cello, Estonian Marcel Johannes Kits finished first and won €15,000 in the process. Second and third went to Yibai Chen (China) and Stanislas Kim (France), who received €10,000 and €5,000 respectively.

In the violin section first place was not awarded, but second (and €10,000) went to Italian Vikram Sedona. Third was collected by another Italian, Giuseppe Gibboni, who was awarded €5,000.

Finally, International ARD Music Competition. In the piano trio section, Aoi Trio from Japan took first and €18,000. For viola, it was China’s Diyang Mei who played his way to victory, taking both first place and the audience prizes (totalling €11,500). In the voice strand, Russian mezzo-soprano Natalya Boeva was victorious (collecting €10,000). For trumpet, Selina Ott from Austria took the top prize and €10,000.
