Colin Marr has been appointed as theatre director at Edinburgh Playhouse Theatre. He leaves his role as chief executive at Eden Court, having held the position at the Inverness company since 1997.

During his 20-plus year tenure, Marr developed Eden Court from a regional theatre into Scotland’s largest arts centre. It now houses two theatres, two cinemas, two studios as well as conference and meeting spaces, with more than GBP23m (€26.2m) spent on its redevelopment.
His role in Edinburgh will be equally challenging, though for different reasons. The infrastructure and audience are already in place at the Playhouse – which, at 3,000-plus capacity, is the UK’s largest theatre – so Marr’s energy will largely be spent on coordinating touring shows as well as its Edinburgh International Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe commitments.
Commented Marr: “I’m very excited to be returning to the capital and look forward to working with the team in this iconic Edinburgh theatre, which plays host to world-leading touring productions, as well as being a key venue for Festival and Fringe seasons.”
The venue is owned by theatre conglomerate ATG, whose business director, Julia Potts, said that Marr: “Brings with him a wonderful track record of success in Inverness, and a wealth of industry experience. I am looking forward to seeing the Playhouse flourish under his vision and leadership.”
