Percussionist Colin Currie has launched his own record label. Colin Currie Records (CCR) will release the Scottish musician’s own recordings in partnership with LSO Live, beginning with Steve Reich’s Drumming in March 2018.
Currie will draw on the large body of work written especially for him. That back catalogue includes pieces by Anna Clyne, Julia Wolfe, Louis Andriessen, James MacMillan, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Brett Dean and Andrew Norman. Next on the agenda is solo recital album featuring works by Iannis Xenakis, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Toshio Hosokawa, followed by further recordings of Reich’s repertoire with the Colin Currie Group.
In addition, Currie has said the label will promote British composers. To this end he has lined up a number of new works by artists such as Helen Grime, Harrison Birtwistle and Simon Holt.
Observed Currie: “The percussion world has expanded exponentially, with more opportunities for soloists and young performers than ever before … and the wealth of new music in the past twenty years is staggering. I’m incredibly honoured to play my part in that.
“It seems a seminal and important moment to capture these remarkable developments on record and I’m very excited about having the chance to curate my own recordings.”
