The Kronos Quartet has joined the roster of MKI Artists for North American representation. Founded in 1973 and now comprising Artistic Director and Founder David Harrington (violin), Gabriela Díaz (violin), Ayane Kozasa (viola), and Paul Wiancko (cello), the Kronos has spent five decades challenging traditional notions of the string quartet and its place in today’s musical landscape. With its roots in the Vietnam War era, the ensemble has placed urgent contemporary issues at the centre of its work – commissioning, performing and recording music
that confronts war and destruction, climate
collapse, social injustice and questions of existence and spirituality.
The Kronos has commissioned more than 1,100 works and arrangements, collaborated with an extraordinary range of artists across genres and traditions, and earned recognition as one of the most influential ensembles of its kind. In 2024, the group’s archive was acquired by the Library of Congress, and its landmark 1992 album Pieces of Africa was inducted into the National Recording Registry for its enduring cultural significance. Its most ambitious legacy project, Fifty for the Future, is a free digital library of 50 new works by living composers – designed to train young artists in 21st-century techniques and exemplifying the quartet’s commitment to open access, education and the evolving life of the repertoire.
