Carlos Acosta’s company Acosta Danza will make its UK debut at Sadler’s Wells in September 2017, with the company also named as a Sadler’s Wells International Associate Company.
‘I am delighted to present the UK premiere of Acosta Danza at Sadler’s Wells,’ said Sadler’s Wells’ artistic director and chief executive Alistair Spalding. ‘It is exciting to see Carlos work with a range of dancers and leading choreographers to celebrate Cuba’s rich history and culture and share it with the world.’
Acosta established Acosta Danza following his retirement from The Royal Ballet in 2015. He said that the company, ‘has been founded with the intention of paying tribute to the wealth of Cuban culture. The company will develop its contemporary work, whilst also using elements of classical ballet.’
The programme for the Sadler’s Wells’ show includes work from choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (Belgium), Goyo Montero (Spain) and Marianela Boan (Cuba). The company will also tour to Salford, Birmingham, Southampton, Brighton and Edinburgh as part of its UK trip.
During his ballet career Acosta appeared with American Ballet Theatre, Paris Opera Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet and Australian Ballet. He was a principal dancer with English National Ballet and Houston Ballet before joining The Royal Ballet in 1998. He was made a CBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List in 2014 for his services to ballet.
