National Ballet of Canada (NBC) has received a welcome lift via a CAD150,000 (€98,600) donation from HBC Foundation. The donation was announced at a private cocktail reception at Saks Fifth Avenue’s new Queen Street store in Toronto. 1,500 guests attended the event which was open to NBC patrons, dancers and staff.
HBC Foundation was created by Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC), a well-known Canadian department store whose origins go all the way back to 1670. Saks Fifth Avenue is owned by HBC.
‘The generosity of the HBC Foundation and the graciousness of Saks Fifth Avenue is a demonstration of their commitment to the arts community and marks the beginning of our partnership,’ said NBC executive director Barry Hughson. Principal dancer Sonia Rodriguez has recently featured in a social media campaign for Saks.
The evening featured a company class with NBC’s apprentices, as well as a display of pointe shoes. Live music and a video installation were also part of the evening, with proceeds going to NBC. The company has not specified what the donation will be used for.
La Sylphide opens NBC’s winter season on 2 March, with mixed programme The Four Temperaments & Rubies & Cacti following on 9 March. Romeo and Juliet then opens on 16 March.
