British Composer Awards shortlist announced

The shortlist for the 2013 British Composer Awards has been announced.

A total of 39 works have been nominated across 13 categories, including Chamber, Vocal, Sonic Art and Contemporary Jazz.

Nominees include Stephen McNeff’s The Chalk Legend (nominated for the Making Music award), Raymond Yiu’s (pictured) The London Citizen Exceedingly Injured (Orchestral) and Richard Rodney Bennett’s Colloquy with God (Choral).

In the Sonic Art category, all three shortlisted works are from first-time nominees, including Ed Baxter and Chris Weaver for their mass-participatory public artwork, No Such Object (Speed of Light).

Over 300 works by over 200 composers were submitted to the awards, which are now in their 11th year. The full shortlist can be found here.

The event is presented by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, and is sponsored by PRS for Music.

The 11th British Composer Awards will be held on 3 December at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London, and will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on 7 December.
