Bregenz Festival has released its full programme for 2020. The festival, which runs from 22 July – 23 August, will bring four operas to the shores of Lake Constance.
Rigoletto, which debuted last year, will return. Featuring a huge clown head and an inflatable balloon that floats over the lake – that have quickly become iconic – Philipp Stölzl directs, with Enrique Mazzola conducting the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
The big new indoor commission for 2020 is Nero, which will play at the Festspielhaus. Directed by Olivier Tambosi, it opens the festival on 22 July. Written by Arrigo Boito and originally premiered in 1924, the new production will see Dirk Kaftan conducting the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
This year’s festival also features three shows at the Kornmarkt. The first is a new opera from composer Ľubica Čekovská titled Impresario Dotcom. It will be directed be by Elisabeth Stöppler, who previously directed The Golden Dragon at the festival.
The second programme at Kornmarkt is Beethoven goes Africa, a concert featuring theatre and puppetry. Bochabela String Orchestra & Friends will perform works by Soweto String Quartet, Mango Groove, Zuko Samela and of course Beethoven (30 July). Finally, the Kornmarkt programme is completed by Bregenz Opera Studio’s staging of Joseph Haydn’s Armida.
Deutsches Theater Berlin will perform this year’s theatre production at the Workshop Theatre. The production is an adaptation of Heinrich von Kleist’s Michael Kohlhaas, directed by Andreas Kriegenburg.
