Stanton Welch’s new version of La Bayadère will add a Bollywood flavour to the classic Indian-themed work.
Premiering in Melbourne and later transferring to Sydney, dancers from The Australian Ballet will be joined by a string of acclaimed international guest artists, including Stuttgart Ballet’s Elisa Badenes and Daniel Camargo, and American Ballet Theatre prima ballerina Gillian Murphy.
Australian Ballet artistic director David McAllister told The Australian: ‘It’s a fantastic production, lavish and beautiful. I really wanted to do a full-length Bayadère. It’s one of those challenging 19th-century ballets. [Welch] has got rid of a lot of the mime scenes and added more dance, especially for the men.’
The production runs from 28 August – 6 September.
