BlakDance, an Indigenous performing company in Brisbane, is launching a new residency programme. Titled Performing Country, its goal is to enable “artists to make work on country in relationship with performing arts centres and community.”
In practical terms this means the residency will move to different First Nations territories and help create new works there.
Stated BlakDance: “Built from a multi-dimensional co-commissioning and co-investment model, Performing Country develops presenter capacity, audience demand and local First Nations community engagement with contemporary First Nations dance.”
Performing Country will tour to Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Gympie in March 2020. Led by artists Katina Olsen and Aleks Borys, the programme will, “encourage local communities to share and exchange astronomy stories through yarns, song and dance.”
The programme will sit alongside its BlakDance Residency Program, which launched in 2018. More information on the programme is available via the BlakDance website.
